The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially begun releasing the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, allowing candidates to check their scores via SMS and the JAMB eFacility portal. The announcement, made on May 8, 2025, at JAMB’s National Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, has triggered widespread reactions across Nigeria, as over 75% of candidates scored below 200, raising concerns about the state of education.

The 2025 UTME, held from April 24 to May 5, saw 1,955,069 candidates participate across over 700 accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers nationwide. According to JAMB’s statistical analysis released on May 5, over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, with only 420,415 achieving scores above this threshold. Just 467 candidates (1.16%) scored 300 and above, with their final admission status pending further evaluation.

Candidates can check their results by sending “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the registered phone number, at a cost of ₦50, or by logging into the JAMB eFacility portal. JAMB has advised using only these official channels to avoid scams. Some candidates reported accessing scores as early as midnight on May 9, though the release is gradual, and some results remain unavailable pending review.

The high failure rate has sparked intense reactions on social media, with many describing the results as a “national embarrassment” and blaming students, parents, and JAMB for neglecting academic rigor. Others called it a “huge shame” for the government and education system. Unverified claims suggest JAMB is withholding results of underage or underperforming candidates, adding to public frustration. JAMB has not addressed these claims directly but noted that delays in some results stem from reviews for issues like biometric challenges and suspected malpractices, with 2,157 candidates under investigation.

Education stakeholders have commended JAMB’s anti-malpractice measures, suggesting stricter oversight contributed to the low scores. Critics, however, point to systemic issues like inadequate preparation and technical glitches at CBT centers. JAMB has called for patience, stating that results are being released in batches and candidates with pending issues, such as biometric verification, will be rescheduled if cleared.

As candidates await their scores and prepare for post-UTME screenings, the 2025 UTME results have ignited a broader debate about Nigeria’s education system. JAMB urges candidates to stay updated via its official website and verify information through trusted channels to avoid misinformation.
