The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong public warning against the activities of fraudulent land vendors operating within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This follows the arrest of one Nwobo Williams Chibuike, a suspected serial fraudster who has been posing as a legitimate real estate developer and duping unsuspecting Nigerians.
According to a statement released by the Commission, Chibuike was apprehended in Abuja after multiple complaints were received from victims who claimed to have been swindled in various dubious land transactions. The suspect allegedly deceived members of the public by offering them non-existent plots of land in prime locations including Kurudu, Sabon Lugbe East Extension, Kpeyegyi, and Jikwoyi Village Extension.
Further investigations revealed that Chibuike operated under several fake real estate companies, including C&C Reality & Construction Limited, Dream-Krest Homes and Properties Limited, and Dan Faith Shelters Limited. He is said to have posed as the Managing Director of these entities, using them as a front to lure prospective land buyers into fraudulent deals.
The EFCC uncovered that the suspect marketed fictitious plots in multiple areas within the FCT—such as Karsana, Pyakasa, Katampe Extension, Guzape 2, Kuje, and more—convincing buyers to make large payments for land that did not exist. The amounts involved in the fraudulent transactions reportedly ranged from N3.5 million to as high as N60 million, with several victims losing life savings and business investments.
The Commission confirmed that a formal inquiry with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) showed that none of the lands being marketed and sold by Chibuike and his associates were genuine or allocated by the government. The FCDA disclaimed any knowledge of the locations or the companies involved.
Chibuike is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
The EFCC is urging members of the public, particularly those looking to acquire land in the FCT, to exercise extreme caution and verify all property transactions through authorized channels. They warned against engaging with itinerant land marketers or agents who cannot provide legitimate documentation from the FCDA or other relevant authorities.
Anyone with relevant information or who may have been defrauded is encouraged to report to the nearest EFCC office.
