Pakistan Suspends Visas for Indians Amid Escalating Tensions After Deadly Kashmir Attack

Diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 tourists. In response, Pakistan has suspended all visa services for Indian nationals, expelled Indian diplomats, and closed its airspace to Indian flights.

The assault, which took place near the popular resort town of Pahalgam on Tuesday, saw a group of gunmen open fire on a tourist convoy. Police officials in Jammu and Kashmir have identified three of the four suspected attackers—two believed to be Pakistani nationals and one a local Kashmiri. The fourth suspect remains unidentified.

Indian authorities have linked the attackers to the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). However, Islamabad has vehemently denied any involvement, dismissing the allegations as baseless and unsubstantiated.

“There has been no credible investigation or verifiable evidence to implicate Pakistan,” said a statement from the country’s National Security Committee.

A Diplomatic Breakdown

The attack triggered an immediate and severe reaction from both nations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the massacre in a fiery speech, vowing that:

“India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers. Our enemies have dared to attack the country’s soul, but India’s spirit will never be broken.”

In retaliation, India shut down the Attari-Wagah border, halted all visa services for Pakistani citizens, and suspended participation in the Indus Waters Treaty, a vital water-sharing agreement that has held for over six decades. Pakistan warned that any attempts to tamper with the treaty would be regarded as an “act of war.”

In a reciprocal move, Pakistan announced:

  • Suspension of all Indian visa exemptions and visa services.
  • Closure of airspace to Indian-operated aircraft.
  • Reduction of Indian diplomatic staff in Islamabad to 30 members.
  • Expulsion of Indian defence, naval, and air attachés, who must leave by 30 April.
  • A full suspension of bilateral trade.

The Human Toll of the Pahalgam Attack

The victims of the attack included people from various parts of India—families, newlyweds, and working professionals. Among them:

  • A naval officer on honeymoon.
  • A local tourist guide who was the sole provider for his family.
  • A businessman vacationing with his wife and children.

The tragedy has left the nation in mourning, with tearful farewells and wreath-laying ceremonies held across several Indian states. Schools and businesses in the region have cautiously reopened after an initial shutdown, though the shock still lingers.

Police have detained over 1,500 individuals for questioning in connection with the attack. Authorities are offering a reward of ₹2 million ($23,000 USD) for information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect.

Growing Tensions and Fear of Reprisal

Amid the growing geopolitical fallout, reports have emerged of Kashmiri students facing harassment in several Indian states. Videos circulating on social media allegedly show right-wing Hindu groups threatening Kashmiri Muslim students, particularly in Uttarakhand, demanding that they leave their institutions or face violence.

“We’re receiving disturbing videos and reports of harassment from multiple campuses,” said Nasir Khuehami, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association.

While the BBC has not independently verified the authenticity of these videos, the situation has heightened communal tensions, prompting calls for restraint and protection for all citizens, especially minorities and students far from home.

Looking Ahead

An all-party meeting in Jammu and Kashmir issued a joint statement expressing deep anguish over the “barbaric attack”, urging both India and Pakistan to avoid further escalation that could destabilize the region.

As tensions rise, the international community is watching closely, hoping that diplomacy will prevail over conflict. But with both sides hardening their stance and public sentiment inflamed, the path forward remains fraught with uncertainty.
