President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in what is being described as a significant political development.
The closed-door meeting reportedly took place in London, and according to The Africa Report, it was held at the request of Governor Fubara, who assumed office in May 2023.
This marks the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution on March 18, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of both Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
In his national address announcing the emergency rule, President Tinubu cited “months of intense political instability” that he said had crippled governance in the state and posed a threat to national security.
The decision sparked swift backlash. Seven opposition governors from PDP-controlled states immediately filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court, challenging the legality of the President’s move and demanding a restoration of democratic rule in Rivers.
While details of the London meeting remain undisclosed, insiders suggest the talks could be a critical step toward resolving the political crisis that has gripped the oil-rich state and drawn national attention.
